WaPo finally breaks NSA spying story
Reported here a year ago when the NY Times first broke the story in the Main Stream Media, we now have official confirmation that the Total Information Awareness program that Sen. Feingold defunded in 2003 has remained operational from other sources of funding. In an attempt to shield Gonzales, the Bush Administration is coming clean with hints of the program.
To refresh our memories, we live in a country where all communications is monitored and stored. Every email, IM, phone call is digitally intercepted at the telephone company's headquarters and diverted to a massive storage center. There are obvious debates on the efficacy of such a program and its need to remain covert. Potential for abuse is the issue here, however, and the legislative and judicial branches have not had proper oversight over the use of this information.
We have been asked to trust our government. They have not earned that trust. History has demonstrated that governments have habitually abused power and information in order to benefit the interest of those in power. Nothing new to report here. Just wondering when the other shoe would drop, and find out if anyone cared.
